Iraqi Refugees

14May07

Just watched a really afronting episode of Dateline on SBS. It was about the 1.7million refugees who’ve fled Iraq since the coalition’s invasion. Roughly 700,000 have gone to Jordan who itself has a population of only around 5million. That’s a huge percentage. It’s akin to 2.8million refugees hitting Australian shores over only a couple of years. I find it hard to believe we would have invaded if that was a foreseable side-effect. Most of the fleeing Iraqis left due to torure, threats to there life or unstable surroundings. Gangs have used kidnapping and ransom as means to a financial end (with plenty of brutality along the way).

One telling stat was that the US have accepted less than 500 refugees since the war began. They talk of being there only to help the Iraqis but the abuse, vilification and murder of minorities left to there own devises is a huge failing on the part of the coalition.
